Advocacy
We’re empowering the next generation of education advocates on the foundation of our Seven Point Platform. That’s because equipping young leaders with the intersectional knowledge, skills, and passion necessary to champion equitable public education will bring a new front of youth to the desks of policymakers and legislators.
A better education system is possible.

#1) Upholding the Right to Collective Bargaining for Educators
In a time of record slow matriculation into the education sector, collective bargaining rights improve teacher retention and quality of work. Collective bargaining provides educators with much needed voices in their jobs and divisions, allowing educators to negotiate contracts, wages, and benefits with school divisions. Saphron Initiative believes that collective bargaining should be mandated for divisions where the majority of division employees vote for union representation. We oppose Right to Work in the context of education and believe educators deserve adequate, meaningful union representation.
#2) Ending School Privatization & the use of Public Funds for Non-Public CMOs
Saphron Initiative pushes for stronger, renewed public schools instead of charter schools and school privatization. Charter schools are a destructive, business-like model of education that exacerbate disparities by rerouting money from public schools and removing accountability before the public. The charter model is so inconsistent that it forms disparities even among charters themselves. With poor conditions, charters face higher teacher turnover and create conditions of failure for communities. Even Albert Shanker, the initial mastermind and proponent behind the charter school model, has since denounced charter schools as ineffective and a backdoor route towards privatizing public education. Ultimately, public funds belong in public hands and not in the control of private sector Charter Management Organizations (CMOs).

#3) Defending student safety by ending gun violence and policing of schools
Schools of the 21st century face unparalleled safety challenges. On one side, mass shootings have become a consistent, recurring threat, resulting from uncontrolled access to firearms. Saphron Initiative and Saphron Initiative’s endorsees back efforts to ensure gun access for minors is viably blocked off—and that firearms don’t reach hands of those who are mentally disturbed. Saphron Initiative has a strong record in advocating for student safety, having co-launched BanAssaultRifles.com and reaching more than 60,000 digital messages sent to legislators. On the other hand, policing of schools abets these safety challenges in hurting students by criminalizing youth at disparate rates and strengthening the school-to-prison pipeline. School-based police officers, commonly known as School Resource Officers (SROs), also detrimentally impact student safety. A 2019 research study published in the medical JAMA network found that the mortality rate in school shootings over the last few decades was 2.83 times greater in schools equipped with SROs on campus than in those without. Saphron Initiative advocates for restorative justice in lieu of school policing and endorses the principle of no policing in schools by eliminating and refusing to renew MOUs with local police departments.
Saphron Initiative believes that education begins at the earliest stages of development, which can significantly influence a child’s achievement and education. Thus, the Saphron Initiative advocates for free, universal pre-kindergarten. Universal pre-kindergarten programs will help set foundations for later learning to close achievement gaps by mitigating socioeconomic disparities in educational outcomes by ensuring that all children, regardless of their family income or background, have access to quality early education. These programs additionally provide reliable and affordable childcare options for working parents, enabling them to remain in the workforce or pursue further education and training.
#4)
Public, Universal Pre-K

#5) Rejecting Public Funding for Private Tuitions
Giving families discount vouchers for private schools does not fix American public education. Saphron Initiative stands against vouchers and considers a method to further destabilize public education by redirecting funds to private schools. Vouchers are often marketed and introduced in the form of K-12 ‘Education Savings Accounts’ (ESAs), often just paying private school tuition for families who would go to private schools regardless. Subsidizing private schools with public money—even when rebranded as “school choice”—leaves remaining public school students constrained in weak, deliberately underfunded public school divisions. Saphron Initiative unilaterally opposes vouchers.
#6) Establishing equitable Gifted & Talented (GT) programs in every public school
The Saphron initiative believes in advancing every student’s potential through equitable identification of gifted students and universal gifted and talented programs. These programs will ensure that students are adequately challenged and have opportunities to reach their full academic potential regardless of their socioeconomic status or background. Universal GT programs identify and support giftedness in traditionally underrepresented groups like low-income and minority communities through ensuring that giftedness is not overlooked due to systemic biases and limited opportunities. By employing instructional strategies tailored to students’ strengths and weaknesses, GT programs have the potential to support personalized learning and help close opportunity gaps. The Saphron Initiative advocates for nationwide benchmarking of gifted programs to guarantee equitable access, establish baseline standards, and promote holistic evaluation.

#7) Broad youth engagement in education policy & decision-making
As youth in education advocacy, the Saphron Initiative backs broader youth engagement in education policy decisions. Youth engagement ensures that the diverse perspectives of students from various backgrounds, including those from underrepresented and marginalized communities, are included in policy-making processes, particularly those impacted by these education policies. First-hand involvement of youth with these education policies provides valuable insight into current policies and helps develop these policies further, better addressing these students' actual needs and priorities. Through empowering students to speak out about pressing education issues, we hope to foster a sense of agency and responsibility to contribute meaningfully to discussions about their education.
